Mrs. Ruth Josephine “Jo” O’Kon went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on Friday, January 27, 2012 at Homewood Health Campus in Lebanon, Indiana. She was born in Hamilton County, Indiana, on June 13, 1922, the daughter of the late Roy Wilbur and Ruth B. (Moore) Moore. She attended Westfield High School for three years then moved to Lebanon and graduated from Lebanon High School with the class of 1940. She attended the Approved University of Cosmetology in Indianapolis and graduated as a master cosmetologist, and later was a teacher of cosmetology in Florida. During World War II, she served as a volunteer Nurse Aide at Witham Memorial Hospital and made U.S. 81 MM, M - 56 shell casings at U.S. Machine Corporation.
She was preceded in death by her husband, F. Joseph O’Kon; her parents; her siblings, Nancy Ann McCamis, James Allison Moore, Sr., and Virginia Mae Cotton; two gradsons, Jeffery Allen Groce and Joseph Kevin Avant; and a step-son, Michael C. O’Kon.
She is survived by two daughters, Sharon R. Lofton of Lebanon and Joyce D. Carpenter of Haddock, Georgia; two grandsons, David (Linda) McKane of Indianapolis and Jon (Tonya) McPheron of Lebanon; three granddaughters, Kimberly (Jimmy Crumpton) McKane of Indianapolis, Carol (Troy) Powell of Bloomington, and Michelle (Chad) Miller of Lebanon; 12 great grandchildren and 14 great great grandchildren.
She and her husband lived and worked in Lebanon until they retired in 1979 and moved to Punta Gorda, Florida. She continued to do hair from a salon in her home until moving back to Lebanon to live with her daughter. She was a lifetime member and past president of the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, and a lifetime member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Indiana Hairdresser’s Association. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and never missed an opportunity to spend weekends and vacations with her family, especially her grandchildren, fishing and boating on Raccoon Lake. She enjoyed bowling, golfing, bicycling, crocheting, other crafts and needlework, and singing in the choir. Playing Bingo was her all-time favorite game, along with crossword puzzles and games. Myers Mortuary, 1502 North Lebanon Street, Lebanon, Indiana will be handling the arrangements. Visitation will be at the mortuary on Tuesday, January 31, 2012, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 1, 2012, at the First Church of the Nazarene, 1122 Garfield Street in Lebanon. Interment will follow in Lincoln Memory Gardens, Whitestown, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to any of the following; Indiana Alzheimer’s Association, Nazarene Memorial Roll Roster, or the Gideon Bible Society. |
