Charles Robert Parr

Charles Robert Parr (Bob) entered the Church Triumphant on Tuesday, April 4. Bob was the son of the late Willett H. Parr, Jr, and Mary Jane Lenox Parr of Lebanon, Indiana. Bob graduated from Lebanon High School in 1943, then served two years in the Philippines in World War 2 on the staff of General Douglas MacArthur. On returning from the war he graduated from Indiana University where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. Graduating from the Indiana University School of Law in 1951, he practiced law at the family firm in Lebanon, Parr, Parr, and Parr (now Parr, Ritchy, Frandsen, Patterson and Kruse) for many years. Later he became Vice-President and Chief Counsel for Mutual Security Life Insurance Company based in Fort Wayne, Indiana for 20 years. He was a member of Rotary Club both in Lebanon and Fort Wayne. On June 26, 1948, he married Martha Ann Honan in Lebanon. They became the proud parents of the Rev. Carol Honan Parr of Boiling Springs, PA, Kirk Lenox Parr, MD (Dr. Sharon) of Zionsville, and Kent Crooks Parr, Esq. (Rev. Pamela Abbey) of Concord California. Bob was a Sunday School teacher of teenagers, young adults and older adults for many, many years at Centenary United Methodist Church and Otterbein UMC in Lebanon. In 1962 he and Martha began hosting exchange students in their home for several years through the Youth for Understanding Exchange Program, Ann Arbor, Michigan. They have remained close to and in contact with the young men who lived with them as well as with their subsequent wives and children. All are considered family, even with the passing of the years and there has been much visiting back and forth in the ensuing years. Bob, for many years, served on the Board of Trustees for the Malpas Scholarship at Depauw University which has given four year full scholarships to hundreds of students in Indiana since 1963. He also was instrumental in establishing the Carl Scering Scholarship at Indiana University Bloomington and served on its Board of Trustees for 30 years or more. Bob was a member of Broadway United Methodist Church. Grandchildren include Joshua Murtorff of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, Nathan Murtorff of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, Gabriel Murtorff of Hatboro, Pennsylvania, Luke Parr, MD, of Portland, Oregon and Natalie Parr Mead, DO (Cory) of Rockford, Michigan. Bob was pre-deceased by his parents, his sister, Mary Margaret Lowder, and son, Kevin Daniel. Services will be held at Otterbein United Methodist Church, 804 South Lebanon Street in Lebanon on April 15, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. Calling will be at the church from noon to 2:00 p.m., before the service. Rev. Carol Honan Parr will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations sent to Otterbein United Methodist Church, 804 South Lebanon Street, Lebanon, Indiana or the Rolla M. Malpas Trust Scholarship Fund. Checks should be made out to the Rolla M. Malpas Trust and sent to: Dr. Don Findlay, President, Malpas Scholarship Board, 615 North Riverside Drive, Elkhart, Indiana 46514. Myers Mortuary has been entrusted with arrangements.
