Age: 94 ½ WidowedCity of Residence: Lebanon, IndianaDate of death: Thursday, July 31, 2014Place of death: At her daughter’s home in Thorntown, Indiana Helen Kathleen Shepherd, exactly 94 ½ years old, passed away in her sleep on July 31, 2014, at her daughter, Mary’s home, in Thorntown, Indiana. She was born on January 31, 1920, in Baudette, Minnesota, to the late Samuel Tilford and Agnes Jessica (Molamphy) Bonwell. In Minnesota, Helen graduated from Hastings High School. While in Hastings, she worked as a librarian and also at the Hudson Factory. In the early 1940’s, she moved from Hastings to Indiana, her parents and siblings moved to California. Helen lived with relatives in Crawfordsville and worked in a greenhouse for a short period. On September 7, 1942, she was married to Russell Howard Shepherd in Crawfordsville, Indiana. He passed away on December 17, 1999. After their marriage, Helen and Russell lived in Boone County. During WWII, they lived for a time in California. After Russell’s time in the service, they moved back to Indiana. In Boone County she spent many days working in the cafeteria at the St. Joseph School preparing lunches for the children. Helen was a dedicated farm wife and worked with Russell to raise 11 children. She enjoyed meeting new people so she worked, going door to door, helping residents complete the federal census in 1976 and 1980. A wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, Helen loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren dearly. She enjoyed their many activities. As a young woman, she liked to read, roller skate, fish, sing, and dance. Helen enjoyed researching genealogy. She was proud of her Irish heritage and enjoyed Irish music. Memberships: A loyal member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Lebanon for 70 years. At St. Joe’s she was involved in the “Mothers Club”, “Leisure Ladies”, “Legion of Mary”, and “The Birthday Club”. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 319 East South Street, in Lebanon, Indiana, on Saturday, August 9, 2014, at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Timothy Kroeger, officiating.Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 8, 2014, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 North Lebanon Street, in Lebanon, Indiana.Interment will follow services at the St. Joseph Cemetery in Lebanon, Indiana.The Rosary will be held at the mortuary on Friday beginning at 3:30 p.m. prior to the visitation.
