I. Karen Shoemaker

Ila Karen Shoemaker, 78, lost her battle with congestive heart failure late Monday night, June 19, 2017. She was born at Witham Hospital on May 16, 1939, in Lebanon, Indiana, the daughter of the late Raleigh Kouns, Sr. and Mildred (Wilson) Kouns. Karen was raised in Zionsville and graduated from Zionsville High School. On September 15, 1957, she was married to John William Shoemaker at the Zionsville Christian Church. They were married 53 years before John’s passing on April 11, 2011. Prior to raising her family, she had worked at American States Insurance Company in Indianapolis. While she was a stay at home mom, she volunteered in the crib room at Central Christian Church and taught Sunday school for three and four year olds. Karen was a Brownie Leader and a Girl Scout district cookie mother. She was a member of the Home Economics Club, Jaycees and Newcomers Club, serving as president. Her passions included reading, teaching herself to cook, and above all, her family. She was the spoke of the family wheel: chauffeured her girls to their activities, dance and piano lessons, scouts, 4-H, horse and dog shows. Karen and her husband owned and operated Boone Mutual Agency in Lebanon, Indiana. Together they also enjoyed wintering in Florida. She was an antique dealer for many years, traveling to antiques shows. In later years, she and her husband owned Countryside Antique Mall and John W. Shoemaker Auctioneer Service where she clerked and cashiered. Always a hostess, Karen always enjoyed serving as hostess, planning and preparing food for family dinners and parties, keeping John and the girls in line and on task. Survivors: Three Daughters: V. Boevers and wife, Jennifer – Wynnewood, Oklahoma Amanda S. Trent and husband, Tyler – Jamestown, Indiana Casey N. McClelland and husband, Billy– Otisco, Indiana John R. Scott and wife, Sarah – Rossville, Indiana Ila Sue Robinson and husband, Adam - Frankfort, Indiana Levi T. Scott – Thorntown, Indiana Five Great Grandchildren: Evan M. Trent Kylee L. Trent Zoey G. Trent Joseph Ryan Sutphin Ava A. Scott Brother: Raleigh Kouns, Jr. and wife, Barbara Jean – Zionsville, Indiana Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 22, 2017 at Myers Mortuary, 1502 North Lebanon Street, Lebanon. Funeral Services are planned for 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 23, 2017, at the funeral home in Lebanon. Interment will follow services at Mts. Runn Cemetery, rural Zionsville.
