He was born in Thomson, Georgia, on January 20, 1935, the son of the late Charlie and Nelly Mae (Dupree) Smith. After the sudden and unfortunate death of his parents, he became an orphan at the age of fifteen. He was too old to enter the orphanage, so he made a living until he entered the United States Air Force and served during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge, he moved to Mooresville and operated a gas station in Camby, Indiana. He married Patricia Louise (Aldridge) on October 5, 1957, in Monticello, Indiana. Mrs. Smith died on November 5, 2010. Mr. Smith moved to Thorntown in 1967 where he had since resided. Mr. Smith was an owner-operator with Schneider Trucking of Green Bay, Wisconsin and retired in 1996. He received many awards for outstanding accomplishments as a professional truck driver. He enjoyed his family and friends and shared many enjoyable times with them. Jim loved his grandchildren and was fond of his dogs. During retirement years, he enjoyed the morning coffee club at the Lost Frontier in Thorntown. He spent enjoyable times restoring classic automobiles and traveling. He and Pat enjoyed the Lake Holiday "Hide-A-Way” home and often took his 5th wheel to Texas. He always loved Indiana Basketball and enjoyed watching the Indiana Pacers play. In his later years he loved mowing and working outdoors on his properties.
