John George Hohenberger

John George Hohenberger, Jr., 88, of Thorntown, went home to the Lord, December 20, 2014. After a brief illness, he leaves behind his wife of 68 years, Wanda June Theobald Hohenberger; a son, John G. (Sue) Hohenberger III, of Leland, IL; and daughters Lara Beth (Bill) Sheets of Fort Collins, CO; and Leah (Jon) Davis of Albany, NY. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Born in Shelbyville, IN, George graduated from Shelbyville High School and attended Purdue University. He sought to join the Navy when drafted, and passed the Eddy Test for Radar Training. However, he was denied the opportunity to serve his country because of a repaired shoulder from a football injury. George was blessed with the opportunity to explore farming through a fellow church member, Vernie Adams. He continued farming in Shelby County with his father-in-law and brothers-in-law before farming in Clinton County and finally purchasing the farm near Thorntown in 1962. Always inventive and enterprising, George stayed abreast to the best practices in farming and with Wanda’s help improved and expanded the farm over time. After two heart surgeries, he retired but never lost his passion for farming. He and Wanda were honored to receive the 2003 Boone County Breeders and Feeders Distinguished Agricultural Career Award. From 1989 - 1999, during the planning for expansion in the Carmel and Zionsville area, he served as a member of the Boone County Plan Commission for 5 years, chairing it for two years. He was a Liaison to the Board of Zoning Appeals, then member and chair of that board. His other contributions to the community include: volunteer driving, tutoring, and helping seniors with Medicare and Medigap as a Tax Counselor through the Boone County Council on Aging.Being a life-long, active church member, George recommitted himself to trusting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior in 1973. He began more personal Bible reading and study. At the Thorntown United Methodist Church, he served as trustee, treasurer, bass in the choir, and teacher of children and adults. Visitation will be held at Myers Mortuary, 1502 North Lebanon Street, in Lebanon, Indiana, on Friday, December 26, 2014 from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. Funeral Services are planned for Saturday, December 27, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. with burial to follow at Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville.
