Age: 68 City of Residence: Lebanon, IndianaDate of Death: Saturday morning, January 11, 2014Place of Death: At his residence in LebanonOren Lavern Shockley was born in Lebanon, Indiana, on July 7, 1945, a son of Emeral Raymond and Ruby Gertrude (Clossin) Shockley. Raised and educated in Boone County, Lavern graduated valedictorian of his 1963 Dover High School class. A talented basketball player, he was the team's MVP during his sophomore, junior and senior years. Following high school, Lavern attended Indiana State University. On July 6, 1991, he was married to Melissa Stapleton. The couple had two sons and divorced in 1999, but remained close friends. Lavern worked as the store manager for Boone Hardware and Gifts in Lebanon from 1965 to May of 1993 when the store closed. He then began working at Kramer Lumber in Lebanon where he was a department manager until his retirement on August 25, 2012. He was a devoted father and enjoyed attending his sons’ activities. He participated in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts with his sons for several years and supported them in their efforts to become Eagle Scouts in 2012 with Troop 359 in Lebanon. In his free time, Lavern liked to fish, bowl, woodwork, and garden. His passion for basketball continued throughout his life as he enjoyed watching and rooting for Indiana University. Memberships: Centenary United Methodist Church in Lebanon Funeral Services are planned for 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 16, 2014 at Myers Chapel of Memories, 1502 North Lebanon Street, in Lebanon, Indiana, with Rev. Jim Ramsey, officiating.Visitation will be held at the funeral home in Lebanon on Wednesday, January 15, 2014, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.A Private Family Interment will be held at a later date at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon.
