He was born in Clinton, New York, on October 21, 1937, a son of the late Roy and Helen (O’Neal) Dawes. Richard attended schools in New York. Following school, he enlisted in the United State Army and served his country honorably during the Korean War. On October 26, 1957, he was married to Betty Sue (Bowles) Dawes in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Mrs. Dawes survives.For many years Richard owned and operated his own trucking business, retiring in 2002.He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He enjoyed camping and flying his own airplane.
