Schenkel was born in Connersville, Indiana, on February 23, 1929.She was the daughter of the late Harry and Ruth V. (McCleaster) Schenkel. Shirley was reared and educated in Liberty, Indiana, where she graduated from Short High School in 1947. She then attended Indiana State University and received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the field of education. Her teaching career included two years in Richmond, Indiana, three years in Liberty,Indiana, and one year in Arizona. In 1957, she returned to Indiana and started teaching in the Lebanon Community School Corporation where she worked at Hattie B. Stokes Elementary School and the Lebanon Middle School. At the end of the 1989 school year, Shirley retired after 31 years of teaching in the Lebanon community.In her retirement, Shirley enjoyed being a volunteering at ARC of Boone County, volunteer coordinator for Meals on Wheels, and helping at Boone County Senior Services, where she had been honored with being chosen the “Volunteer of the Year.”Memberships: LCTA / ISTA / NEA Sigma Delta Pi Boone County Retired Teachers Association Red Hat SocietyOfficiating: Rev.
