Mildred W. Flanary

Mildred Wilma (Myers) Flanary, 104, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at Crown Pointe Assisted Living in Lebanon, Indiana. She was born July 5, 1920, a daughter of the late Lowell and Edythe (Crawford) Myers. She married Robert Harrison Flanary on September 13, 1941, at Salem (Mud Creek) United Presbyterian Church. He preceded her in death on January 31, 1990. Mildred grew up in Marion Township, Boone County, also residing in Memphis, Tennessee, Anderson and Gadsden, Indiana, but the majority of her life in Lebanon. She graduated from Kirklin High School at 16 years old and furthered her education at the University of Indianapolis and Indiana University and attained her B.S. and M.S. in Education from Butler University. Mildred taught in Marion Township for three years and Kirklin for four years. Then moving to Lebanon Community School Corporation, she taught at Lindbergh for eight years, Harney Elementary for eight years and finally helping to open the new Perry Worth Elementary school with 10 years of service culminating her teaching career of 33 years. After retiring from public school, she earned certification as Associate in Christian Education from Christian Theological Seminary and served 10 years as Director of Christian Education at First Presbyterian in Lebanon, eight of those as a volunteer. Her memberships included Lebanon First Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Lebanon Singers, Boone County Retired Teachers, Fellowship of Christian Educators, Association of Presbyterian Church Educators, and Symphony as Sunset Group. Other activities included Church pianist, Sunday School Teacher and superintendent, Elder and Clerk of Session, hand bell and chancel choirs, community choirs, vocal instructor, Editor of the Wabash Valley Educator and Wabash Valley Current, ESL tutor, avid reader, family genealogist and world traveler. Devoted to her family, she always participated in and attended their activities. She was a long-time avid supporter of the Bob Flanary Open Tennis Tournament in memory of her husband. Mildred is survived by Roy and Kathy Flanary, son and daughter-in-law and Lisa and Daniel Erwin, daughter and son-in-law, all of Lebanon; grandchildren, Sonya Shoup of Frankfort, Shawn and Liza Flanary of Greentown, Seth Flanary, Meredith Erwin and Gabriel Erwin, all of Lebanon; great grandchildren, Jacob and Jackson Shoup, Ella, Audra and Silas Flanary, and Abel Erwin; nephews, Mikal Myers, Jeff and Christine Myers, and Ray Farag; nieces, Nancy Myers, Michele and Curtis Koger, Vicki Justman, Jennifer and Lance Burdick and their families. In addition to her parents and husband, Mildred was preceded in death by her brothers, Meredith L. Myers and F. Maurice Myers. A Celebration of Life is planned for 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at First Presbyterian Church, 128 East Main Street, in Lebanon, Indiana. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services. A private family interment will be held at Mud Creek Cemetery. Myers Mortuary in Lebanon has been entrusted with her arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to First Presbyterian Church or to Presbyterian Preschool Ministry, 128 East Main Street, Lebanon, Indiana 46052.
