Rev. Richard R. Burdett

Rev. Richard Ray Burdett,77, went home to his Lord and Savior Tuesday evening, December 13, 2022. He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on November 4, 1945, the son of the late Hurlie E. and Gertrude E. (Miller) Burdett. On January 22, 1966, he was united in marriage to Sheila M. (Swift) Burdett in Indianapolis; she survives. Richard was a 1963 graduate of George Washington High School in Indianapolis and a 1971 graduate of Olivet Nazarene University. He served 44 years as a minister in the Church of the Nazarene beginning in Rockford, Illinois. He moved to Indiana and pastored at Odon, Greenwood, Bloomington, and in Lebanon, retiring in 2015. He started the Followship of Collegiate Christians Nazarene Student Center. His heart for ministry brought about the creation of ministries to the following campuses in Indiana: Indiana University, Purdue University, Indiana State University, Vincennes University, and Ball State University. His desire was to encourage, inspire a love for God to effect change in their personal lives. Richard was a dedicated member of the Lebanon Rotary Club and a past member in Bloomington. He held leadership roles with the Salvation Army and was instrumental starting the Men’s Recovery Center in Lebanon. He was also an advocate for chaplaincy work and developed that program at Witham Memorial Hospital. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and leader of his congregations. He loved the Lord and delighted in serving his church and the community in which he lived. Survivors include his wife: Sheila M. Burdett of Lebanon; daughter: Melissa (Burdett) Lamb of Danville; three granddaughters: Rachel Lamb-Lowery (Drew) of Indianapolis, Kerenah Lamb of Danville, Christina Lamb of Lebanon; three great grandchildren: Harper Grace Lowery, Kingsley May Lowery, Ezra Ray Lamb; sister: Darlene Rumple of Brownsburg and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by two brothers, James (Edna) Burdett and Donald (Janet) Burdett; sister, Erma Burdett; brother-in-law, Al Rumple; niece, Jackie Rumple Burns; and a great granddaughter, Millie Ann Morris. Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, December 19, 2022, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 North Lebanon Street, in Lebanon, Indiana. Funeral Services are planned for 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 20, at Lebanon First Church of the Nazarene, 1122 Garfield Street, in Lebanon, Indiana, with visitation again from 11:00 a.m. until time of services. Interment will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery, west of Lebanon. Memorials may be directed to Gideons International.
